Moderation is preparation. Before a panel I read what each guest has published in the last year, write the questions they have not been asked, and cut the ones they have. On the day the job is to keep the clock, stop the pitch, and let the disagreement happen. Keynotes get the same treatment in reverse: one argument, the numbers that carry it, and the slide count kept low enough that people look at me.
